In the feline, veterinary diet space, there’s a lack of variety and options when trying to manage diet-responsive diseases in cats. Tiki Cat® Veterinary Solutions™ is solely cat-focused, making it easier to find highly palatable, “prey-inspired”, clinically proven diets for the most common feline diseases that cat parents struggle to resolve. In addition to our wet-exclusive line being high protein, high moisture, moderate fat, and low-carb, here’s what else to know about us:

1. Clinical Tested with Proven Results!

All of the diet categories (GI-Health™, pH-Balance™, Gluco-Balance™, and Lo-Cal™) have AAFCO feeding as well as clinical trials behind them to ensure superior palatability and clinically proven diet options for the most common feline diseases.

2. Variety of palatable flavors and textures

Each diet category has 3 different textures (shreds, flaked, or pate) and two protein options, chicken or 100% fish.  And we’re the only feline, wet, veterinary diet line to offer a 100% fish option – which is great for chicken intolerant cats! All diets are 100% palatability guaranteed.

3. Trial Packs Always available – for ALL diets!

In order to find the best choice for your picky, feline patients we produce 3-count trial packs for each diet category that contain one of each texture.  This allows a pet owner no risk and the feline patient to try our diets at home in a relaxed environment.

4. We’re a Fear Free™ Preferred Partner

If your clinic practices Fear Free™ techniques during exams and procedures, then you may want to consider our Mousse Stix™.  At only 5 calories and half the size of other commercial tube treats, we offer a perfectly portioned treat for use during exams or as an appetite stimulant. 4. Multiple Platforms to Purchase

You can purchase Tiki Cat® Veterinary Solutions™ through MWI, Covetrus, and Chewy, AND through most Canadian distributors.

Helping Cats Lose Weight: Facing the Common Challenges

Feline obesity is the most frequently observed nutritional disorder of domestic cats. Most of the veterinary community is aware that obesity is a systemic inflammatory condition that can lead to a reduced quality and quantity of life, including its link to osteoarthritis, diabetes, and other comorbidities. So, improving pet obesity could drastically improve the health and longevity of our cats.

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention last shared their survey in 2023, revealing that only 28% of cat owners acknowledged that their cat was overweight. Interestingly, 94% of cat owners believed pet obesity is a significant health issue. Only 43% reported that their veterinarian annually discusses their pet’s optimal weight or body condition. 58% of all pet owners reported they were trying to address the issue, with 63% of dogs and 45% of cat owners attempting to help their pets lose weight. However, only 24% of cat owners shared they tried therapeutic weight loss diets.

This probably sounds all too familiar. The problem hasn’t improved at all. So, how can we finally move the needle on obesity in cats and dogs?

The foundation of weight loss is a therapeutic diet, and research backs this up. In one study, 79% of overweight cats ate more than their calculated weight loss calories on a therapeutic weight loss diet —and still lost weight. (Christmann et al., 2015) That’s the power of a well-formulated, calorie-controlled diet.

From our recent poll of veterinarians and veterinary technicians, the top client objections are:

  • “It’s too expensive”
  • “My cat won’t eat it”
  • “I’ll just feed less”
  • “Those diets don’t work”

And what’s the biggest concern among veterinary professionals when recommending a therapeutic diet? Unanimously, the answer was

“Fear of upsetting the owner.”

Our survey participants are not alone. A 2022 study found veterinarian avoid discussing obesity with some clients and don’t often only limited information. Yet, data from APOP shows most owners aren’t offended by the conversation, and over half of cat owners say they’ve already tried to help their pet lose weight.

Here are four ways to make weight loss conversations smoother and more successful:

1. Lead with the Why

  • Treat obesity like any other chronic condition—it affects quality and length of life.
  • Use objective terms: “overweight,” “clinically obese.” Avoid “chonky” or “fluffy.”
  • Explain how weight loss diets are not just food—they’re a prescribed treatment designed to reduce calories while keeping cats full and nourished.

2. Collaborate with the Owner

  • Avoid blame or judgment. Listen first.
  • Co-create the plan based on their concerns, lifestyle, and the cat’s needs.
  • Recognize other priorities the owner brings up.

3. Offer Practical Options

  • Take a good diet history to recommend cost-conscious or palatable options.
  • Offer samples or small bags to test for palatability.
  • Highlight money-back guarantees for therapeutic diets—these ease the risk

4. Reinforce Team Support

  • Make it clear this isn’t a one-time plan—it’s a journey.
  • Schedule follow-ups and involve the whole team to keep owners supported and accountable.

Conclusion

Addressing feline obesity requires us to shift from avoidance to advocacy and then requires clear, detailed support include an appropriate diet selection to be successful. The disconnect between owner awareness of obesity as a health issue and their reluctance to pursue therapeutic interventions presents a clear opportunity for veterinary intervention. By reframing weight management as medical treatment rather than lifestyle choice, we can help clients understand that therapeutic weight loss diets are evidence-based prescriptions, not premium pet food. The fear of "upsetting the owner" that many of us share is often unfounded—most cat owners are already concerned about their pet's weight and welcome professional guidance when delivered with empathy and practical solutions. Success lies not in perfect compliance from day one, but in building sustainable partnerships with clients through collaborative planning, regular monitoring, and consistent team support. When we approach feline obesity with the same clinical rigor and compassionate communication we apply to other chronic conditions, we can finally begin to reverse this epidemic and meaningfully extend both the quality and quantity of our feline patients' lives.
